Who needs sense?

The pasuk teaches that Hashem gave wisdom into the hearts of all those who are wise at heart. The medrash tells that a Roman noblewoman asked Rabbi Yossi bar Chalafta “Would it not have been better to give wisdom to those who have it not, to fools, rather than to give it to those who have it already?” He replied “Do you lend money to the poor, who need it most, or to the rich, who need it less?” She said “To the rich!” “Why?” he asked. She answered “Because when I lend to the poor I have no way of knowing that I will get the money back. If I lend to the rich my money is secure!” Said the Rabbi “Listen to your own words. Hashem is in the same situation. He could give wisdom to fools, but what would they do with it? Probably continue their foolishness with greater ingenuity. Instead Hashem looks to someone who will make good use of the wisdom he is given, and gives it to him”. What do we learn from this? 1. Wisdom is not ingenuity. Many a slow-witted man is wiser than the world’s genius. That is a significant statement! 2. To merit the gift of wisdom one must be positioned to use it, one must by enrolled in a program of learning, or a framework of growth, where his wisdom will be put to use. One need not really be already wise, only in position to apply wisdom properly.
