Violence…

Moshe saw the Egyptian overseer hitting the Jewish laborer, and struck him dead. What would the reaction be today? I surmise people would mutter about dina d’malchusa dina, perhaps they would discuss possible chillul Hashem, and the issue of preserving law and order would certainly arise. There would be condemnations from various progressive sources that we do not accomplish our goals with violence, rather “hakol kol Yaakov” we use dialog to achieve all our aims, and in general people would try disassociate themselves from Moshe and his hot-headed, rash action. Enough said.

Are we non-violent because it seems warm and fuzzy, or because the Torah dictates so?
