The danger of a global village

What was so terrible about the building of a tower, that Hashem came down to destroy it? The Ran explained that when all people are one group under one authority, this is the most dangerous situation possible. A madman or wicked man takes over the government, and it’s all over. There is no escape, no alternative group. Indeed, this was their idea; to form a single society of all mankind. Hashem deliberately spread them apart, so that they would form separate, and indeed competitive, societies. People can now break the bonds of society, and follow their consciences.
