Keeping Up Appearances

Rashi explains why Moshe was so short in his prayer for Miriam, stricken by tzoraas. It was so that people should not say “His sister is in trouble, yet he stands in lengthy prayer!?” Ridiculous! The prayer was for whom if not for his sister?!

Perhaps the moral to us here is that even though what you are doing may be the most wonderful thing, if people will misunderstand it as a lack of sensitivity and a chillul haShem will ensue, give up doing that wonderful behavior!
