keeping the whole picture in mind

When bringing Bikkurim we say a long drashah. In fact we say almost the entire Hagadah! Why don’t we just thank for the fruits He has given us and stop at that? The suggestion we spoke about was that suppose a person was given a dress as a present. Does it make any sense to thank for a sleeve of it? Of course not! The sleeve is nothing more than a small part of the dress. It would even be positively insulting would we go ahead and thank for the sleeve! What if the dress was a part of an entire ensemble the person had given us. Do we thank for the dress alone, and not mention the shoes and coat? What if the person is a parent who is giving us this same ensemble year after year? The same applies to thanking Hashem. True, we also thank for specific things. It is altogether proper we do so. However, inasmuch as those specifics are an integral part of His general caring for us, and that whole is so far greater than the sum of it’s parts, we must recognize and thank for that whole.
