We discussed why Shimon and Levi disagreed with Yaakov whether it was wise or downright foolhardy to destroy S’hchem. They argued “Are we to let our sister be treated like a zonah?” As if this was news to Yaakov! Wouldn’t you and I have listened respectfully to Yaakov Avinu’s opinion instead? (Perchance if we would be Shvatim we would be surer of ourselves!) Perhaps they decided that this exchange had to take place for their father’s own safety. Yaakov had to disavow Shimon and Levi’s actions, to censure them publicly for it, and they had to say that they don’t accept his position. This way no-one could hold Yaakov accountable for what happened; he obviously was against them doing it, what can he do if they don’t listen to him? Really, though, Yaakov and the Shvatim were in full agreement as to what had to be done. (Side note; there is an interesting disagreement in the m’forshim what was the argument “Are we to let our sister be treated like a zonah?” actually was. Some say that this meant that everybody will understand us because we were so wronged, and therefore we will not be attacked for what we did. Some explain that they said to Yaakov “You are worried for our safety? We are certainly less safe if we will let such an outrage go without response, because then everybody will take advantage of us and consider us walk-overs).
